Arizona Regent Rick Myers, co-chair of the UA President Search Committee, will be our guest speaker at our APAC monthly meeting on Monday 10/31 from 3 to 5p in Law 164.  All AP are invited to attend to make comments and ask questions about the ongoing search.  President Eugene Sander has mentioned repeatedly that we are important stakeholders in this search and we are strongly encouraged to inform the search committee of what we AP believe are the qualities our next president should possess.

The Arizona Board of Regents chooses the next president.   Governor Brewer has chosen three new regents who start their terms this January, so there is no guarantee that our next president will maintain the current state of affairs here.

We hope to see you there.

    Greetings All:

Your Appointed Professionals Advisory Council held its 2011 Strategic Planning Retreat and New Member Orientation yesterday, Monday July 25, 2011. We welcomed twelve new members for a total of 56 members on the Council. The major themes from last year were to promote and recognize the contribution of APs to the campus community. The results of these efforts include:

    1. The Chair of APAC has been invited by President Eugene Sander to serve as a member of the President's Cabinet.

    2. A fund of $10,000.00 from the President's Office has been awarded on a permanent basis for use in the Employee Recognition Awards, which honor both appointed professionals and classified staff campus wide.

    3. Professional Development Scholarships are now available for Appointed Professionals who would like to attend training and workshops.

    4. Our redesigned web site provides more information about the Council’s activities and seeks to enhance campus understanding of the contributions of those we represent.

This year our major theme is to strengthen partnerships with UA Shared Governance (i.e., participating in decision making with the groups and organizations that run this institution) as we continue to promote the importance of AP. We have four committees to convert ideas into actions:

    1. Communications

    2. Professional Development

    3. Awards

    4. Strategic Partnerships

University Human Resources asked us to create sanctioned grievance procedures for Appointed Professionals. As you may be aware, APs who file a grievance go through a Faculty Senate process currently. Our goal is to develop a separate and fair process developed from the beginning with APs in mind.

We are recommending that a member of APAC be nominated to serve on the UA President search committee and represent the views of APs during the selection process. We have invited a representative from the Arizona Board of Regents to talk to us about this hiring process and other topics. With the retirement of President Robert Shelton, we are losing a strong leader who was instrumental with the growth and the strength of APAC. We wish him future success.

The “Annual Meeting of All AP” is scheduled for Tuesday October 4, 2011 at 3 p.m., location to be announced. Our speaker is President Eugene Sander.

We have ambitious plans for improving our relationships with the UA administration and with the administrations of departments and units across campus. We are inviting key figures to speak at our monthly council meetings, and we are always looking for ways to improve our communication with our constituents.

Your council has made huge strides over the last few years in promoting awareness of the important role of APs to the university, its surrounding community and Arizona. We are a volunteer organization and the work we have invested in is paying big dividends. I am proud to serve as chair for this diverse and creative group.

If there are topics you would like to discuss please let us know. Our council meetings are open.

The Appointed Professionals Advisory Council is the UA Shared Governance group that represents all year-to-year Appointed Professionals.
